Abstract Worlds
My current work is a vibrant exploration of abstract worlds, where bright colors, playful shapes, and tiny figures come together to evoke narratives about human experiences. I am particularly drawn to themes of loneliness, connection, and the emotions that exist beneath the surface of everyday life, while being surrounded by a world that often expects happiness and productivity at all times. These abstract worlds are primarily created with oil pastels, while the figures are drawn in ink. The process is intricate, often requiring magnifying glasses, with little room for error. Shading and the reflection of light on the shapes are achieved by rubbing oil pastels with my fingers, adding depth to each form.
Size and scale play an essential role in my pieces. From a distance, my work draws viewers in with its colorful, organized chaos, but upon closer inspection, it reveals intricate details and small figures that invite a more intimate interaction. These tiny figures often serve as subtle entry points for personal reflection, allowing viewers to project their own experiences onto the abstract world I’ve created. I enjoy the challenge of using elements typically associated with joy and playfulness to convey more complex, sometimes contradictory, feelings. This juxtaposition encourages viewers to engage with the work on both a surface level and a deeper, introspective way.
My abstract worlds come in all shapes and sizes, including mini worlds on cotton rag paper, where the tiny figures are smaller than a fingernail. These mini pieces were initially created every morning with a quote at the center—a habit enforced to keep creating during a time when I was feeling an extreme lack of creative energy. Now, I hang these pieces around Washington, D.C. as a form of temporary art for people to discover and enjoy.
When I first started painting in 2022 and 2023, my work focused on texture and experimentation. During that time, I mixed natural materials like spices and tea into acrylic paint to engage viewers with unexpected textures and color schemes. These early pieces were exploratory, and each one offered valuable lessons. Since then, I’ve become more intentional in my approach, maintaining a consistent style while pushing the boundaries of depth and thematic exploration in my recent work from 2024. I can feel my growing confidence and voice as an artist as I continue to refine my craft.
